Indian Rocks Christian doubles up First Baptist Academy 28-14, to extend win streak to nine.11/28/2013 By Brad Richardson, Bright House Sports Network
Last Updated: Saturday, November 23, 2013, 1:04 AM Playoff Football continues in Pinellas County in Class 2A District 6 as the Indian Rocks Christian Golden Eagles took on the First Baptist Academy Lions. The Golden Eagles would advance their winning streak to nine after a 28-14 win over the Lions at Eagles Nest Stadium. For Coach Mark Buchanan, getting a win over the Lions means a great deal to the team but most of all, for the school. “This win tonight is not just for the team its for the school, the students, parents and all the people that make the season possible,” said Buchanan. “You don’t get to this time of year and not expect a team to bring their A game, especially with a school like First Baptist. They did beat us last year and we knew they were going to be really well coached up front." The Lions would startle the Golden Eagles in the first when Dylan Cibelli took the ball 9 yards for a rushing touchdown: Kicker Howard Murrell would get the PAT making 7-0. But the Golden Eagles wouldn’t let their celebration last. Damian King would get a 12 yard run touchdown and kicker Clark Sullivan would get the PAT and it would be tied at seven. Cibelli chipped in with a big 38-yard run for the Lions and would eventually take it in for a 10-yard touchdown - his second touchdown of the night. Murrell would get the PAT making it 14-7 in the first. At the start of the second quarter, Damian King and the rest of the Eagles offense, wanted to put pressure on the Lions defense before the end of the second quarter. King would get a 30-yard touchdown pass from QB Ross Johnson. Sullivan’s PAT and King’s second touchdown would tie the game at 14 at the end of the first half. Heading into the second half, King said his team was ready to finish the game and prove that repeat from last season was not going to happen. “At half time coach gave us a motivational speech and kept telling us to keep rushing the ball and make it 1 and 0 at every down,” said King. A pass interference penalty against the Golden Eagles during the start of the third quarter would allow Cibelli to take the ball to the 25-yard line for a potential Lions touchdown, but King would get his second interception of the night on a pass from QB Tyler Dean. Theo Anderson would take it for an 82 yard touchdown making it 21-14. The Golden Eagles would hold off the lions in the fourth quarter and after a short punt, the Golden Eagles would start at the 33-yard line. Damian King would get 27 yards before getting his third touchdown of the night making it a final score of 28-14. According to Buchanan, having the driving power of Damian King, Theo Anderson, Zeke McGaughy and the rest of the Golden Eagles will make this season one for the record books. “They have been doing that all year and I didn’t expect anything of them less tonight,” said Buchanan. “With a lot of the play action that Damian did, he is definitely going to be a big asset going into the next game. We are not going to change anything and keep doing what we are doing." The Indian Rocks Christian Golden Eagles will be facing off against the Champagnat Catholic Lions on Friday November 29. Last Updated: Saturday, November 09, 2013, 12:38 AM CLEARWATER -- After losing to IMG Academy in overtime last week, Clearwater Central Catholic head coach John Davis said his team needed a confidence boost as they head into the playoffs next week. The Class 3A-7 district champ Marauders got it on Friday night, in the form of a 37-14 win over Anclote. “We felt that this should be a big game tonight and especially so being homecoming,” said Davis. “Whenever you lose what you don’t want to do is multiply and lose again. Last week we felt that we should have won but I thought going into this week we need to focus on trying to get this win first before making the preparations for the team ahead.” The Marauders would dominate the first half of the game. Blake Gomez would score first after getting short pass from QB Jeff Smith for a 49-yard touchdown. Kicker Yanni Ramos would get the extra point. JT Steele would help get the ball up 35 yards after a short punt return from Anclote allowing a four-yard touchdown by Connor Dorris. The Marauders would not relent in the second quarter when Dorris would score his second touchdown of the night. In a shocking twist, Anclote would fumble the ball in the end zone allowing CCC to get a safety making the score 23-0 before the end of the first half. CCC’s Smith seemed to have control of the game in the third quarter starting with an 11-yard pass to John Brunner for the touchdown bringing in Kicker Hallie Hopkins for the extra point. But the Sharks would not stay silent for long when Smith’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Willie Barrett and taken 102 yards for the shark’s first touchdown of the night. CJ Peppe would get the PAT making it 30-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. “Jeff (Smith) made a mistake and he’s still a young quarterback. It’s as simple as that. It’s mistakes like those that you have to clean especially going into this time of year.” The Marauders would answer back with Scott DePergola on the carry for a nine-yard rushing touchdown. The Sharks would try for one last bit of redemption and with 19 seconds left in the 4th quarter, Trent Crawford would take the ball in for Anclote’s last touchdown making the final score 37-14. For Davis, the teams results gives him confidence going into next week, although there will be a few obstacles to overcome. “Our defense and offense has played well all year. I couldn’t be more pleased with our guys tonight. Although we did had a lot of injuries with this game. Steele and Royer are two of our players that are banged up right now and that’s going to be a recovery for them. This is not the time of the year you don’t want to be banged up.” The Marauders (8-2) will be hosting Bishop Verot at home in the class 3A district 5 playoffs and Anclote (6-4) will be facing Tarpon Springs in the Class 5A District 7 playoffs. Last Updated: Saturday, October 26, 2013, 12:45 AM PALM HARBOR -- The Osceola football team is getting hot as the weather cools. The Warriors logged their third-straight win -- a come-from-behind 22-21 decision over Palm Harbor University -- on Friday night. For Osceola Head Coach George Palmer, being on this streak couldn’t have come at a better time in the season. “We take pride in going from play to play and of course like every team we love winning, said Palmer. “We tried to throw the ball a lot tonight, but we found out it worked better to rush the field. When you have Jamil Morris and Quadarious Patterson, they will make sure they get the job done.” The Hurricanes would score first after a pass from Tyler Kaminski to Dominick Bonelli would bring first and goal, and Kaminski would run the ball in for a touchdown. Osceola would answer back with a 70-yard run setting up Jamil Morris to take it in for his first touchdown of the game. With 29 seconds left in the first quarter, Kaminski would throw a 70-yard pass to Dominic Bonelli to put the Canes back on top, 14-7. Tanner Tinsley would also score to put PHU up 21-7 at the half. The game appeared to be PHU’s favor, but according to Palmer, the game was not over yet and they came back ready to repair the mistakes they made. “They definitely outplayed us in the first half,” said Palmer. “Defensive coaches made some adjustments in the second with their short games turning them into long games. We had to make some decisions in trying to stop their passing game.” The comeback started with Morris' second touchdown of the night on a 51-yard run to cut the lead to 21-14. The Warriors got a big turnover when they stopped Kaminski on a 4th-and-1 at the end of the third quarter. Morris then ran in the final touchdown of the game, with Wilan Harvey scoring the two-point conversion that would be the difference in the 22-21 final. Next week, Osceola’s (6-3) last home game of the season will be against Venice and PHU’s (4-4) will be against Manatee High School. “We are going to have to play our best football against Venice to keep the game from getting away from us,” said Palmer. “We can’t make the mistakes we did tonight when we come Friday to playing them. They are one of the best teams in the state for a reason.” Volume XXXV No. 29 October 24, 2013 Page 1ATwenty-four bands from around Pinellas and Hillsborough County competed in the 37th Annual Seminole Sound Spectacular at Seminole High School on Oct. 5. competition. By Brad Richardson, Bright House Sports Network Last Updated: Saturday, October 19, 2013, 12:33 AM CLEARWATER -- The Clearwater Central Catholic (CCC) Marauders battled against their crosstown rival the Calvary Christian Warriors in a Friday night Class 7A District 9 showdown. The Marauders would continue their winning streak defeating the Warriors 47-23 keeping the number one spot in the district as well as preparing for districts in two weeks. For Coach John Davis of the Marauders, it is great to have the winning streak they are on now, but it’s important to not take any team lightly. “We were certainly very impressed on how well Calvary played, they are a team that never quits, they just keep playing hard,” said Davis. “But going into districts in a couple weeks, we need to clean up some errors that we did at this game. We put the ball on the ground and did a couple of picks, but overall we will certainly take the win.” CCC would dominate the first half of the game. Yanni Ramos on the Marauders would kick off with the Warriors receiving. The Marauders would score first after Eric Davis retrieved a botched punt by Warriors Kicker Cody Streger, taking it 39 yards for the touchdown. Ramos would get the extra point making it 7-0. CCC continued to score after QB Jeff Smith would get the ball to the 27 yard line before taking it in for another CCC touchdown making it 14-0. But Calvary would get revenge when Macs Thomas intercepted the ball taking it 55 yards for the Warriors first touchdown. Streger’s kick would be blocked making the score 14-6. The Marauders would answer back after J.T. Steele would get an 85-yard kick return. Making the score 21-6 before the end of the first quarter. “Right when the ball came to me, I unfortunately dropped it and I was like oh no this isn’t going to be good,” said Steele. “But then a pocket just opened up and my blockers did good and I just took off running. I just didn’t stop after that.” At the start of the second, CCC's Demetri Royer would intercept QB Conor Regan’s pass getting the ball at the Calvary 21 yard line. DiQuan Walker would take it in for the touchdown. CCC would attempt to finish the half with a 29-yard touchdown from John Brunner. But Jeremy Wood would get Calvary another touchdown making the score 34-13 before the end of the second quarter. CCC would continue their stomping routine after J.T. Steele would go for an 80 yard touchdown making the score 40-13. The Marauders kicked would be blocked. Calvary would answer back on 40-yard field goal by Streger. CCC would score one final time after a 50 yard run from CJ Cotman. Kicker Hallie Hopkins would get the extra point making the score 47-16. Warrior QB Jeremy Wood would get a 25-yard pass to Zachery McGuire closing out the game 47-23. The Marauders (6-1) will be facing Admiral Farragut while the Warriors (4-3) will be facing Shorecrest Prep. CLICK HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS OF THE GAME By Brad Richardson, Bright House Sports Network
Last Updated: Saturday, September 28, 2013 CLEARWATER--Both Gibbs and Clearwater entered homecoming night at Jack F. White Field looking to make headway in their rocky seasons. After losing to district rival Lakewood 24-14, Gibbs’ (1-5) offense and defense secured a 48-13 win over the host Tornadoes (0-5), giving them their first win of the season. For head coach Rick Kravitiz, tonight’s win felt great after the rough start that the Gladiators endured in the season so far. “It’s been a hard and tough year so far,” said Kravitiz. “We have made a lot of adjustments and played a lot of good teams at the start of the season. But it’s nice for them to get a win. It was a big win for both offense and defense. They played very well. And there was more confidence in our guys tonight.” In addition, he understands the same struggles Clearwater’s coaching staff is facing. “Donnie (Abraham) is a class act and has been doing a great job with the Tornadoes. He has been kind of the doing the same thing I have, which is changing things.” Abraham, the former NFL cornerback, was head coach at Gibbs before taking over at Clearwater this season. He served as an assistant with the Tornadoes in 2012. Gibbs dominated the first quarter. Brevitt Killet would get the first touchdown for the Gladiators, and then Tyron Lansom would get the second score on a 65-yard run. But a failed two point conversion would leave the score 12-0. Clearwater would answer back with Tupac Blanch getting the Tornadoes their first touchdown after a fumbled punt return by the Gladiators, but it was all Gibbs after that. Maurice Hall would get a 43-yard run touchdown in second quarter and Killett would get the two-point conversion. Hall would get his second of three touchdowns, followed by a touchdown by Jacques President after a 20-yard pass from Killet. The score would be 34-6 at the end of the first half. Hall would go 80 yards for his third touchdown at the beginning of the third quarter. Killett delivered a 15-yard pass to Troy Killens at the start of the fourth quarter and after fake field goal, Killett would get the two point conversion making the score 48-6. According to Kravitiz, their first win of the season will be a great reason for his guys to be pumped and ready for their own homecoming next week. “Once you get a taste of a good win, you are going to be hungry for another one.” Clearwater will be at Countryside next week, while Gibbs hosts Tarpon Springs. Last Updated: Saturday, September 21, 2013, 12:04 AM SEMINOLE--The Pinellas Park Patriots continued their undefeated streak in Pinellas County, taking another win over the Seminole Warhawks in a Class 7A, District 9 matchup. After defeating Osceola in a close 10-8 win, the Patriots (4-0) achieved a 35-10 win from the Warriors’ cross-town rival. After that close game against the Warriors, head coach Kenneth Crawford wanted every part of his team to be ready -- especially now that the stakes are raised in district play. “For us every win is a big win, especially if it is a district win,” said Crawford. “Every week the offensive line continues to get better. Our own quarterback Angel (Addison) plays offense and defense, but one of the reasons he became one of our quarterbacks is just because he leads so well. I must stress that we are one team, not a single player team.” Seminole would score first with a 42-yard field goal by kicker Marshall Legard. Pinellas Park would answer back with an 81-run touchdown by running back Pierre Johnson, making it 7-3. Seminole’s QB Aaron Dever would give the Warhawks a short 10-7 lead after a five-yard touchdown. But the Warhawk celebration would not last after a 20-yard run by running back Kal-El Williams. The score would be 14-10 Pats at halftime. The Patriots dominated the second half. Donte Maxson had a 67-yard score, while Williams and Oscee Calhoun added touchdowns as well. Although a setback loss for Warhawk head Coach Chris Miller, he continues to stress that this team is still building to where they need to be before districts. “We are building and will continue to keep building,” said Miller. “I am proud of the way our kids fought. Pinellas Park is a playoff team. We are going to be working hard to get to that level. We have a lot of young players and since we are a young team, these guys are gaining valuable experience that we hope will benefit them in the long run.” Pinellas Park will be facing Dixie Hollins at home next week, and Warhawks (1-3) will be at Palm Harbor University. |
