CLEARWATER -- The Clearwater Central Catholic (CCC) Marauders battled against their crosstown rival the Calvary Christian Warriors in a Friday night Class 7A District 9 showdown.
The Marauders would continue their winning streak defeating the Warriors 47-23 keeping the number one spot in the district as well as preparing for districts in two weeks.
For Coach John Davis of the Marauders, it is great to have the winning streak they are on now, but it’s important to not take any team lightly.
“We were certainly very impressed on how well Calvary played, they are a team that never quits, they just keep playing hard,” said Davis. “But going into districts in a couple weeks, we need to clean up some errors that we did at this game. We put the ball on the ground and did a couple of picks, but overall we will certainly take the win.”
CCC would dominate the first half of the game. Yanni Ramos on the Marauders would kick off with the Warriors receiving.
The Marauders would score first after Eric Davis retrieved a botched punt by Warriors Kicker Cody Streger, taking it 39 yards for the touchdown. Ramos would get the extra point making it 7-0. CCC continued to score after QB Jeff Smith would get the ball to the 27 yard line before taking it in for another CCC touchdown making it 14-0.
But Calvary would get revenge when Macs Thomas intercepted the ball taking it 55 yards for the Warriors first touchdown. Streger’s kick would be blocked making the score 14-6. The Marauders would answer back after J.T. Steele would get an 85-yard kick return. Making the score 21-6 before the end of the first quarter.
“Right when the ball came to me, I unfortunately dropped it and I was like oh no this isn’t going to be good,” said Steele. “But then a pocket just opened up and my blockers did good and I just took off running. I just didn’t stop after that.”
At the start of the second, CCC's Demetri Royer would intercept QB Conor Regan’s pass getting the ball at the Calvary 21 yard line. DiQuan Walker would take it in for the touchdown.
CCC would attempt to finish the half with a 29-yard touchdown from John Brunner. But Jeremy Wood would get Calvary another touchdown making the score 34-13 before the end of the second quarter.
CCC would continue their stomping routine after J.T. Steele would go for an 80 yard touchdown making the score 40-13. The Marauders kicked would be blocked.
Calvary would answer back on 40-yard field goal by Streger. CCC would score one final time after a 50 yard run from CJ Cotman. Kicker Hallie Hopkins would get the extra point making the score 47-16.
Warrior QB Jeremy Wood would get a 25-yard pass to Zachery McGuire closing out the game 47-23.
The Marauders (6-1) will be facing Admiral Farragut while the Warriors (4-3) will be facing Shorecrest Prep.
